£170m Package for Economic Growth (March 2008)

A European economic aid package to replace the Objective Two programme has been announced for the South West excluding Cornwall which has its own programme.

The remit, under the title of the Competitive Programme, is to spend £170 million to stimulate job creation and business growth in some of the region's more deprived areas.

Phil McVey, head of European programmes at the South West Regional Development Agency said that the money will be more focused than under Objective Two and will have three priorities - innovation and knowledge, enterprise and growth and urban enterprise.
